The Blinn College District is offering a variety of scholarships for students who enroll in its technical and community education (TCE) courses, including almost $3,000 in scholarships for students who pursue Blinn’s three-course Manufacturing Technician Program.

Karla Flanagan, Dean of Technical and Community Education, said scholarships are available for the manufacturing technician courses that will begin in January. Scholarships worth $550 are available for the AutoCAD course, $900 scholarships are available for Basic Machining, and $1,500 scholarships are available for Computer Numeric Control Setup and Operations.

The registration deadline is Jan. 19, 2021.

Through the Manufacturing Technician Program, students learn to set up and operate machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools. To prepare graduates for the jobs of tomorrow, all Blinn manufacturing technician students are trained on computer numerical control (CNC) lathes, which rapidly are replacing older production lathes due to their ease of setting, operation, repeatability, and accuracy. The program also includes instruction in industrial safety, precision measurement, and production quality.

Additionally, Blinn’s Hodde Center has strong relationships with local businesses, helping many students to identify job opportunities prior to graduation. According to Workforce Solutions of the Brazos Valley and the Texas Workforce Commission, manufacturing technicians earn a median annual salary of $36,729 in the Brazos Valley and $38,654 statewide.

The Division of Technical and Community Education has 10 endowed scholarships funded by more than $145,000 in donations.

“Washington County residents have been very generous with their support and commitment to workforce and technical education,” Flanagan said.

Blinn’s Technical and Community Education programs have been designed in partnership with industry leaders to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce.
